Abstract
To determine whether lipopolysaccharide (LPS) structures of Acinetobacter species are immunologically related to those of 4 other gram-negative organisms, E. coli, S. flexneri, S. typhi, and P. aeruginosa, we immunoblotted from polyacrylamide
gels
the
LPS of these strains with rabbit immune sera(RIS) raised against 10 Acinetobacter strains.
The LPS patterns obtained by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of whole cell lysates of all Acinetobacter strains which were treated with proteinase-K showed smooth colony profiles. The LPS patterns of E. coli, S. flexneri, S. typhi, and P.
aeruginosa
were showed typical smooth-type profiles, like as ladder type O-side chains. The LPS profiles of different serovar and species of Acinetobacter strains were differ from each other in O-side chain and core region.
Some RIS raised against Acinetobacter strains was confirmed to recognize core oligosaccharide fractions of LPS of E. coli, S. flexneri, S. typhi, and P. aeruginosa. Several fractions of high molecular weight(O-side chain) of LPS found to be
recognized
RIS raised against A. baumannii YKA1205 and YKA108 in the western blot assay.
These immunological cross-reactivities between RIS against Acinetobacter and LPSs of 4 different bacterial species were implicated that there could be common epitopes among different species of gram-negative bacteria and the core regions in the
LPS
of
various gram-negative bacteria were share similar structues.
